Bio:

Appearance:

Despite years of hormone therapy and many cosmetic surgeries, Giovanna is still very tall, muscular, and has a strong, angular face. She wears her hair in a short, sleek black bob, and favors conservative dresses and pantsuits in dark colors. In fae mien, her skin turns a shadowy, translucent blue and her eyes (sclera, iris, and pupil) turn a flat black. Her ears disappear, replaced by tufts of black feathers, and the disembodied hooting of a faraway owl can occasionally be heard when she speaks.

Concept:

Giovanna da Silva (born João Tavares da Silva, 1961) was born in Lisbon, Portugal. The Silva family emigrated to the United States when he was twelve, leaving Giovanna (as the young boy secretly referred to himself) distraught, angry, and isolated. João performed poorly in school, often skipping class to take impromptu walking tours of Silver Spring.

The only class that really caught the child’s interest was music, and João’s parents – desperate to please him – paid for piano, violin, and singing lessons. With his parents’ permission he dropped out of school at sixteen and went to work in a store selling musical instruments. Still wrestling with his own sexuality, the young man began singing in his church’s choir and playing violin in a local youth orchestra.

Giovanna’s Keeper, a moon-pale, beautiful androgyne that called itself the Ward of Black Oaks, seduced João with the promise of granting him his greatest wish, if only he would come and sing for her and play violin at her home in the forest.

What followed was a long, lonely Durance spent heard but never seen, as Giovanna was held captive in a cage of black thorns amidst a stand of tall, winter-bare forest. The changeling had a tiny house that produced – as if by magic – all the food, clothes, and musical instruments her heart desired. And true to the Fae’s word, Giovanna’s sex finally matched her identity.

After a Durance of ten years spent alone and unseen, the Ward granted its changeling her release. Giovanna returned to Earth, dismayed to find that she was no longer biologically female. (To this day, she is convinced that her Keeper is still laughing, there in its dark corner of Arcadia.) Under the assumed identity of Giovanni da Silva, she began to slowly rebuild her life, becoming active in the Spring Court and the transgender community of DC.

Giovanna’s name change was legalized in 1995; her sex-reassignment surgery completed in 2004, shortly before she and Chandani exchanged vows. Like Chanticleer, when Sundown performs she is typically found in the Hollow, as the calmer environment is more suited to her dirges and torch songs. She also emcees on a regular basis.
